Rio Blanco largely prevails over gas firm tax valuation

A state board agrees with Rio Blanco County that an energy company’s gas gathering and processing personal property assets in the county are worth far more than what the company paid Encana for them and other holdings in 2017. The Colorado Board of Assessment Appeals has decided that the assets in question, owned by Utah Gas Corp., had an actual value for tax purposes of about $29.6 million for the 2019 tax year. That’s a downward adjustment from the $32.1 million value that the Rio Blanco County Assessor’s Office had put on the assets, but Utah Gas Corp. had argued they should have been valued at $6.5 million.

Doctor who challenged state rules in court closes practice

From the street, the desk that Dr. Gajendra Singh was trying to squeeze through the front door to his office Friday morning looked as if it would be too large to fit. But with a little help, some finesse and turning it to just the right angle, it slid through with no scraped knuckles or pinched fingers — a fitting metaphor for the high-stakes, David v. Goliath lawsuit he filed against the state. Singh, a surgeon and the owner of Forsyth Imaging and Forsyth Surgical Associates, sued the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Health Association — just for the right to buy his own MRI machine.

Homestead Creamery looks to cows genes to broaden milk s appeal

Homestead Creamery has a plan to urge customers wary of dairy to try drinking milk again. A few years after launching its first line of so-called A2A2 milk, thought by some to be easier to digest, the Franklin County company is going all in. Each of the dairies it works with has fully transitioned its herd to cattle with the A2A2 gene. It won’t change the taste or the nutritional value of the product, but it could draw in new customers who in the past have experienced digestive discomfort after drinking milk. “We started getting testimony where A2A2 milk really made a difference. We’ve been reading some science, and we believed it,” said David Bower, co-owner of Homestead Creamery and the owner of a dairy that provides some of its milk.
